As Tel Aviv sweats through record-breaking July heat, many locals are seeking creative places to stay active and social. Council-run gyms and recreation centers across the city are reporting a noticeable uptick in registrations for group exercise classes this season.
This surge comes at a time when extreme weather and rising living costs are combining to reshape health habits. With temperatures hitting 36°C in late June—five degrees above average for the month—indoor, air-conditioned options have become a lifeline for residents who want to avoid both the midday sun and costly private gym memberships. Tel Aviv municipality officials confirmed increased demand for council-funded wellness options since the start of this summer’s heatwave.
Gordon Pool on Rehov Eliezer Peri remains one of the city’s landmark wellness destinations, now offering aquatic aerobics and synchronized swim classes with council-subsidised prices. The onsite fitness center, adjacent to the iconic outdoor saltwater pool, hosts weekly Pilates and yoga sessions for all ages. For those closer to the city center, the Dizengoff Center Sports Club atop the bustling mall at Rehov Dizengoff 50 has doubled its Zumba and HIT (High-Intensity Training) classes since April, catering for over 400 participants in June alone.
Outside the city center, the municipal Matnas (community center) network in neighborhoods like Ramat Aviv, Neve Tzedek, and Florentin are all running expanded summer schedules. The Ramat Aviv Matnas on Rehov Levi Eshkol recently launched early morning bootcamps and seniors’ stretching groups, hoping to serve residents hesitant to travel far or pay higher private studio fees.
The fees for Tel Aviv-Yafo’s council-run fitness classes are subsidised, with most matnas group sessions ranging from 35 to 50 shekels per class. Gordon Pool’s group water aerobics ticket costs 55 shekels for Tel Aviv residents, and multi-class punch cards bring prices even lower. According to municipal data provided to The Daily Tel Aviv, attendance in group sessions at city-owned recreation centres grew 22% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, accelerating particularly in late June. City Hall’s 2026 wellness initiative aims to get 10,000 more residents participating in council-sponsored fitness programs by December.
Newcomers can browse up-to-date schedules on the Iryat Tel Aviv-Yafo’s official website, which lists available classes by language, accessibility features, and age group. Most facilities now offer advance online booking, due to capacity limits put in place after recent well-attended events at Sportek Tel Aviv in Yarkon Park saw classes fill up three days in advance.
For Tel Avivians looking to beat the heat, save shekels, or simply meet their neighbors, municipal group classes are a practical first stop. Local officials hint that more expanded timetables are coming in August—especially for seniors and youth. It’s a good moment to check registration policies now: spots for popular classes like early-morning yoga at Charles Clore Garden tend to go fast. Bring water, book in advance, and expect to see familiar faces—community fitness may just be the season’s healthiest habit.
