Tel Aviv Workers Combat Sleep Disruption From Night Shifts
Night shifts at Tel Aviv hospitals and hotels disrupt rest for thousands, yet targeted routines and local programs help restore balance.
How we reported this

More than 28 percent of employees at major Tel Aviv medical centers work rotating night shifts, according to internal staffing data released last month by Ichilov Hospital on Weizmann Street.
The pattern leaves nurses, security guards and kitchen staff in the Florentin neighborhood fighting fragmented sleep that raises risks for metabolic issues and mood disorders. Citywide growth in 24-hour delivery services and tech support roles has pushed the share of irregular schedules higher since 2023, when the municipality recorded a 15 percent rise in night-work permits.
City Programs Offer Anchors
Ichilov’s occupational health unit runs a monthly workshop series on light timing and caffeine cutoffs that began in March 2025. Participants receive wrist monitors for two weeks to track actual sleep windows. A second resource sits inside the Levinsky Market area, where the Tel Aviv Wellness Collective holds drop-in sessions every Thursday evening for hospitality workers finishing late shifts at nearby hotels.
Both sites report steady attendance from residents who live within a ten-minute walk, reducing the extra travel that often cuts into recovery time.
Numbers Behind the Advice
A Tel Aviv University study published in January 2026 tracked 340 local shift workers and found those who kept bedroom temperatures below 19 degrees Celsius gained an average 47 minutes of consolidated sleep per cycle. The same cohort cut daytime caffeine after 4 p.m. and reported a 22 percent drop in insomnia scores after eight weeks. Workshop fees at the Collective run 120 shekels for four sessions, while Ichilov offers its monitoring program free to employees with at least six months on the roster.
Workers who combine fixed sleep blocks, blackout curtains on Allenby Street apartments and short outdoor walks before shifts show the clearest gains in the data set. Hospitals and hotels continue to expand these options, with new sign-ups opening next week at both locations.
